Crown Cup makes the grade

Newcastle-under-Lyme College isnt your typical run-of-the-mill student site. Not all colleges can boast a stunning new 60 million campus, showcasing some of the best examples of modern architectural design. Opening in January 2010, the new college building now lays claim to some of the most advanced facilities in the country and estates manager Martin Bostock knew that the vending operation on the new campus had to make the grade.

Martin had built up a long-term working relationship with local vending operator Crown Cup, and approached managing director Paul Marriott as soon as the planning process started for the new campus buildings.

"The college caters for just under 3,000 full time students, and 10,000 part time students, so it was essential we could supply the correct balance of machines, to suit everyones needs," Paul explained. "Because of the sheer size of the campus there are a number of areas where students are encouraged to relax and enjoy something to eat or drink. As a result - and after detailed liaison between Martin and myself - we devised a mix of vending solutions that would cater for everyone."

The result was a full armoury of new machines across the campus - including four snack machines (Crane), five hot drink machines (N&W) and 18 water coolers, which Paul and his team service on a regular basis.

"As a family-run, local business were able to provide ongoing support to all our customers - from the most suitable machines for their venues, through to advice on the best products to place in the machines," Paul continued.

Among the product mix that Crown Cup has recommended for Newcastle-under-Lyme College are the range of snacking products from Burtons Foods, which have proved an instant success, sustaining a long term uplift in sales. The range includes Maryland Cookies, Cadbury Fingers, Jammie Dodgers and Wagon Wheels.

Paul explained, "Burton's Foods Out of Home Snacking division has a fantastic range of iconic brands. Experience tells us that consumers turn to brands for comfort and reassurance and are more willing to pay a premium for them. Having seen the immediate results at Newcastle-under-Lyme College it makes perfect sense for us to roll these products out across our entire snack estate."
